What is a mantra ?
The term “mantra” comes from Sanskrit: ‘man’ (mind) and “tra” (tool). Mantras can help us harmonize, regain a sense of fulfillment, or support our meditation practice. Often associated with deities, they are a more accessible symbolic form than the direct evocation of ultimate reality, which is difficult to conceive of by nature. This approach is reminiscent of the concept of archetypes theorized by Carl Jung.
Why sing them ?
Mantras are not limited to simple mental or verbal recitation; chanting them, and more specifically combining them with melodies as part of Kirtan (a collective devotional singing practice), adds an extra dimension to the experience. Setting mantras to music primarily aids memory: melodies serve as a mnemonic device, making it easier to internalize the sounds, words, and intentions associated with them. In addition, singing itself has a beneficial effect on well-being. Studies have shown that singing in a group stimulates the release of serotonin, a hormone linked to joy and feelings of happiness. Thus, the practice not only helps to improve our emotional state, but also creates a climate of harmony and cohesion within the community. Finally, the fun aspect is far from negligible: getting together to sing is a real pleasure, strengthens social bonds, and helps us open up to others, while supporting the spiritual approach that underlies the use of mantras.
Karim’s approach
His approach is holistic and inclusive. You can use these practices as pragmatic tools or spiritual practices. The result I seek to convey is above all the pleasure and feeling of connection during the practice. He invites you to join my Kirtan sessions in Lausanne to discover the joy of singing together. Whether you are a novice or an experienced practitioner, my sessions are designed to be accessible to all. Come and experience the power of mantras and the beauty of Kirtan in a welcoming and inspiring environment.
Satsang
Kirtan is also an opportunity to gather for satsang, a beautiful practice where we come together to discuss the myths and legends that inspire us. Through these incredible stories, we explore and explain complex philosophical topics. It is a moment of sharing and collective learning that enriches our understanding of yoga and its benefits.
